Delay the Disease™ (DTD)

About Delay the Disease™

OhioHealth Delay the Disease™ is an evidence-based fitness program designed to optimize physical function and help delay the progression of symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease. This wellness program is a combination of focus on a person’s Core, Cardio, and Brain.  The class gently develops core strength for balance supplemented by light cardio to increase the heart rate. An increase in heart rate has been shown to increase firing in the brain and lead to results in cognitive enhancement and maintenance when it is combined with memory drills and sequential patterns. The series of exercises consists of activating the muscles in your feet, walking drills to help aid in gait issues, posture drills, hand dexterity drills, balance, and brain drills.  BUT the best part of the class is camaraderie.  The stories and experiences we share weekly give us the strength to live and persevere with this disease!!

Initially created by a team at OhioHealth, Delay the DiseaseTM is an evidenced-based wellness program that empowers people with Parkinson’s Disease to live better, and experience new levels of hope by optimizing function and restoring independence. This national wellness program is designed to retrain the mind and body.  Participants report improvement in quality of life, regained ability to successfully manage the disease, and regain control. This program targets daily functional challenges and symptom-specific fitness agendas.  Exercise plans are adapted to all levels of the disease, valuable to newly diagnosed and progressed states alike.

Class Description

This 1-hour class is a Parkinson's symptoms specific exercise class that can be done seated or standing.  In this class, we combine using the right and left or upper and lower parts of the body in opposite and corresponding ways through movement (clinically called multitask and divided task exercises), as well as sequential short-term memory drills.  This class focuses on our core for balance, adds in light cardio to increase our heartrate which in turn fires up the brain for cognitive enhancement and maintenance. You will need a sturdy chair, good shoes, an air-filled balloon, and a coin (the smaller the coin the more challenging).
